Where is a good place to do a pack and paddle (kayak and camp) in New Mexico?
June 28th, 2009 | by admin |I asked this question a short time ago, and it got deleted. Someone named Tom with a tour company answered, but I never saw the response before it was deleted. Looking to go in early July, preferably mountainous area. Would prefer to not have a guided tour so we can do our own thing.
My buddy lives in Taos, and I used to work out there as well. He paddles the Rio Grande quite often and you can head up into Carson National Forest and bag Wheeler Peak and some other mountains over 12,000ft. There was considerable fire damage there a few years ago and I haven't been there since '02, so some of the scenery most likely hasn't fully recovered. I'm not certain how many camping areas are right along the river, but there are some drive-up USFS spots outside of Taos. As you go further south, you'll find more camping areas in Bandelier NF..again, I'm not sure about the paddle-to camps in that area either. I've hiked a lot there, but I don't remember much in the way of river camps, at least not ones only accessible by boat.

If your in the South West you should research GIla National Forest, lots to do and see and there are plenty of trails into the National parks there.
