When Kayaking on a river, do you first kayak upstream and then back down to where you began?

I'm interested in kayaking, but curious about how it's done. Do you first paddle upstream and then back down to where you started or do you paddle downstream and then arrange for transportation back to your car?

We usually bring 2 vehicles and drop one off at the end, then take the other one to where we start. That way we only have to paddle downstream and don't have any hassle at the end of the trip when we're tired.

Since you burn more energy paddling upstream, I'd imagine you'd want to do that first, then coast back down.

Or, like you said, arrange for transportation. There are organized companies that do this.

When I do it I always do it with friends (duh) so we have more than 1 vehicle, one for pick up one for drop off. We neaver considered doing the method you thought about 'cause if you go on a proper whit water river (like we do) you will not get upsteam, but if you mean stillish not very fast water I don't see why you couldn't do that. Just remember what ever you do don't go bu yourself!

When kayaking in a river you fo what is called a shuttle and have two cars. One stays at the put in of the river while the other drives to the take out. The car that stays at the put on holds the things that do not need to be used on the trip (cell phones, clothes, etc) when you arrive at the take out you take the car that was left there to the first car. if you are solo (well here in CO) we hitch hike a ride back to our cars. So overall you go down river the entire time and then drive upstream to the original starting point.
