My kayak paddle is stuck together?

July 3rd, 2009 | by admin |

I have a Carlisle Magic Nylon paddle and after the last time I went kayaking I could take it apart again. It has the little metal tab in the whole that needs to pressed before you can pull it apart. Any suggestions on taking it apart without damage to the paddle! Once I get it apart I will sand it down a bit so it’s easier next time.
Thanks for the help!

I’ve had that problem so I hope some of this advice helps.

If there is a boating supply store around somewhere, get a small bottle of BoeShield. This is a silicon type lubricant made for aircraft and boats that helps prevent corrosion without damaging the materials. I use it on my paddle before I snap the two ends together and on the metal components of my boats to protect and lube them. Squirt some into the hole around the button — press it in with a wooden spoon or something if it is jammed so the liquid can get inside. Let it sit a few minutes and try again. Gently heating it with a hairdryer might help, too. You might have to get someone to help you pull it apart so that you can hold the button down with one hand while both of you pull and twist the paddle ends. If you can’t get Boeshield, use WD-40 but make sure you clean it off well with soap and water when you get it apart. Then be sure to spray the two ends of the paddle shaft with Boeshield before putting it back together — I actually rubbed a bar of soap on the joint once when I didn’t have lubricant and it helped. And never store your paddle without taking it apart after you have used it.

I have had this problem before also, try a good lubricant and spray it good and sit it up awhile (hr or so). Now push in the button and start pulling and twisting back and forth, it should give! If not try some more spray lube, and wait a while longer! I will give it up! Try silicon, or bar soap to lubricate, use scotch brite or steel wool to clean it when you get it apart. I’d rather have a tight fit than a lose one!
