How far can you go in a kayak in one day?
December 29th, 2009 | by admin |This would be on a very slow flowing river. How far do you think you can travel in a kayak in one day? Probably about six hours of paddling.
I have a friend who, along with his wife, paddled from Palos Verdes to Catalina Island in a day. That’s probably somewhere around 22 to 25 miles and I think it took them about 8 hours, so that’s about 3 mph. That was in the ocean, not a river.
On a slow flowing river… maybe 15 to 20 miles in 6 hours.

When I am paddling I figure a good long day is somewhere between 15 and 20 miles.
Now if you are on a fast river or really a hard paddler more than 20 isn’t out of the question.
Think about 3mph

Questions. Are you going upstream or downstream. What kind of kayak will you be paddling? What kind of physical shape are you in ? Are you a skilled paddler? Are you a novice? Most kayakers and canoers travel up to 30 miles a day.

A kayak like an "Epic Endurance 18 ft" can be paddled 15 -20 miles in 4 hours ,
on a large relatively flat water lake similar to Lake St. Clair in Michigan
Since most rivers have turns, twists and don’t go straight at all combined with some other obstacles
a generic average for a novice paddler would be 2.5 - 3.5 miles per hour –without any current.
You’ll probably stop, rest, have to piss, etc., etc.
For 6 hours I’ll guess you’ll only cover about 12 - 15 miles total

Gosh, that depends on so many factors, from your fitness and skill level to the current and winds. Freya Hoffmeister just finished kayaking around the entire continent of Australia this week after 11 months of paddling in her Epic 18. Some days she paddled over 60 miles!

Naturally that’s an exception. An average paddler in average conditions should allow about the same pace as a brisk hike on land: 2.5 to 3.5 miles per hour.
